Just when we thought our day couldn’t get any better, we were contacted by a representative for the gorgeous Kendall Schmidt, yes, the one from Big Time Rush, and were asked if we would like to interview the man himself about his project, Heffron Drive. For you Rushers out there, you may already know that Heffron Drive was a duo that Kendall and buddy Dustin Belt formed prior to BTR’s emergence into pop history. Now that BTR is finishing up their 2013 summer tour, Kendall is ready to pursue music with Heffron Drive once again. Best of all, he was ready to talk to us all about it!
On The Teen Beat: How do you keep up the pace of touring, writing and performing and not be at a loss when it comes to making new music?
Kendall Schmidt: That’s a good question. Sometimes things can get to be a bit much and I just have to slow down the process. It’s important to work hard, but also not to burn yourself out, you know?
OTTB: Do you think it will be difficult for your fans to watch you make this change, knowing you as an actor and singer, rather than a singer/songwriter/musician?
KS: From the beginning, it was always my plan to do music. Whether that’s BTR, Heffron Drive or a solo career. I think my fans know that BTR is not a forever thing, and many already knew about Heffron Drive early on, so I don’t expect the change to be very jarring for them.
OTTB: What is the type of music you plan to create with Heffron Drive?
KS: I’m still feeling out the vibe for Heffron Drive going forward. I know I want to create a hybrid sound. I’m circling around a pop-rock-dance sound.
OTTB: The BTR shows were always high energy. What can we expect for your work with Heffron Drive?
KS: Heffron Drive is way more intimate than BTR. BTR definitely has its moments when you feel like it’s just you and us. I think Heffron Drive will feel like an awesome jam sesh with friends.
OTTB: Can we expect an EP or full-length CD any time soon from Heffron Drive?
KS: That’s tough to say. There is so much in flux right now, it’s hard to know when and how much I will be able to release.
OTTB: Will you also continue writing for others as well?
KS: I love to write for other artists. Each writing session is different because each artist, band, group has a unique personality and take on music.
OTTB: What’s next for Kendall Schmidt?
KS: I first want to thank you for joining me on this journey. I’ve had an amazing time meeting with and performing for you all and I look forward to seeing and making awesome music for you all in the years ahead.
